I saw a friend post on Facebook once that read, “Girls: Keep your heels high and your standards higher”. While I am not sure that the high heels part applies to our every single day to day living (Don’t get me wrong, I love a good pair of cute heels for fun times; however on a daily basis my feet love the comfort of flats and flip flops.) I digress…

The point is… while high heels are more of an optional accessory for us as women… high standards are not optional, they are essential.

I love the way that Romans 13:13-14 talks about high standards in the Message Translation, “We can’t afford to waste a minute, must not squander these precious daylight hours in frivolity and indulgence, in sleeping around and dissipation, in bickering and grabbing everything in sight. Get out of bed and get dressed! Don’t loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!”

No one said that the Christian life was an easy life… right living often requires more effort and energy. Our willingness to hold to these higher standards reaps rewards… not always seen in this life- but promised to a believer in their eternal life. James 1:22 tells us,” Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” (NIV)

This month our LeadHer Local chapters are talking about Battle Buddies. These are the people that are not just in our life… but they are active in doing life with us. Battle Buddies are the friends that challenge us to better and support us- so that together we are better and stronger.

Our battle buddies are important because they help hold us accountable to the high standards of life that we have been called to live.  Our Battle Buddies cheer us on, they lift us up and they challenge us to dig in. They are willing to fight not only for us… but also lovingly fight with us when we need to be reminded to not lower our beliefs, our expectations, or our standards.

This concept makes me think of the story in Exodus 17 where the army of Israel was at battle with the Amalekites. As long as Moses held his staff up in the air the army of Israel would have the advantage in the battle; however when he would grow weak and weary and lower his arms… the tide of the battle would shift to their enemies. Instead of infusing Moses with supernatural strength… God provided Moses with two Battle Buddies, Aaron and Hur, who came along beside him- each physically holding up one of Moses’ arms.

Many times in life, we are faced with trials and temptations that tempt us to lower our standards. We may consider taking a shortcut, entering into a dangerous relationship, compromising our character, sacrificing our reputation, uttering words we will later regret, or struggling in our faith. Sometimes in these tough times God gives us the strength to deal with a circumstance on our own.  Other times… he blesses us with Battle Buddies to help lend their strength to support us, challenge us, and help us hold tight to the standards we have been called to live.

Battle Buddies are the people who have permission to call you out in an effort to raise you up.

There are times that these friends will support us physically like Aaron and Hur did for Moses.  There are other times that the support will be in the form of a listening ear, a bag of chocolate, a much needed laugh, an unexpected but much needed financial blessing, or a willingness to pray with you and for you.

As I shared on our teaching video this month, we were not created to do life alone… God often works in us through others. Who are the Battle Buddies in your life and how are they helping to hold you up through the battles of life right now?
